Highlights from the postseason
Vancouver Public Schools was represented well at the fall 2016 state tournaments. The following student-athletes placed in the top 10:
For the third time in the program’s history, Columbia River High School’s girls’ soccer team (pictured above) claimed the state title. The Chieftains defeated Liberty High School 3-2 in the 2A championship on Nov. 19 in Shoreline, Washington.
The team includes Katie Anthony, Annie Benson, Elizabeth Canton, Julia Cash, Kyla Castro, Maddie Christian, Sophia Connell, Shalece Easley, Emma Fisk, Sarah Givvines, Ava Greer, Sophia Keenan, Lauren Kersavage, Sophie Landers, Hannah Larson, Marta Larson, Katie Lee, Aleah Miller, Joy Miller, Yaneisy Rodriguez, Alex Schulz, Julia Skimas, Sophia Skimas, Amber Sunset, Ellie Walker and Kylee Yakimchick. Filomon Afenegus is the head coach.
Skyview High School’s girls’ team finished seventh in the team competition. The varsity team includes Ellen Burbank (eighth overall), Presley Timmons, Krystal Kaufman, Isabella Abbruzzese, Makena Harbertson, Emily Hogan and Sophie Friauf. The varsity coach is Bob Brands.
The state meet was held at the Sun Willows Golf Course in, Pasco, Washington, on Nov. 5.
Swimmers from Columbia River High School lead their team to a sixth-place overall finish at the girls’ 2A state meet held Nov. 11 and 12 at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Washington. The following student-athletes placed in the top 10 individually:
- Sydney Boyle—third in 400-yard freestyle relay, fifth in 200-yard individual medley, fifth in 200-yard medley relay and sixth in 100-yard breaststroke
- Athena Duus—fifth in 200-yard medley relay
- Keleigh Kelly—third in 400-yard freestyle relay
- Madisyn Morin—10th in 500-yard freestyle
- Kara Noftsker—second in 100- and 200-yard freestyles, third in 400-yard freestyle relay and fifth in 200-yard medley relay
- Makena Wilcox, a student at Vancouver School of Arts and Academics swimming for Columbia River—third in 400-yard freestyle relay, fifth in 50-yard freestyle, fifth in 200-yard medley relay and eighth in 100-yard butterfly
Their head coach is Carol Sandison.
Skyview High School’s football team reached the semifinals of the 4A state tournament, where it ended its bid for the championship in a game against Richland High School on Nov. 26 in Kennewick, Washington. The team’s starters include Brody Barnum, Jayden Chatman, Tavis Chunphakvenn-Pinkney, Chyrius Duckett, Chad Eigsti, Hayden Froeber, Dy’von Green, Tanner Greene, Cole Grossman, Noah Hellyer, Ryan Hull, Jevon Kelly, Michael Lundgren, Skyler Martin, James Millspaugh, Austin Nolan, Angelo Sarchi, Jovon Sewell, Jeremiah Wright and Travis Yajko.
