Skyview
High School is the newest high school built in the Vancouver
School District. Skyview was designed with the idea of open
learning areas. When you enter one of the 6 learning wings
of the school, you see classes being taught with no walls
and doors, however there are movable walls that can be rolled
out when the situation requires, such as a test requiring
quiet or minimal distractions. This design allows students
and staff access to the whole wing. Every learning wing includes
a student service desk with a secretary and an office for
an administrator or counselor.
In
addition, Skyview includes a commons, which features a food
court. The restaurants that are in Skyview are not McDonald's,
Pizza Hut, etc...but they do serve the same types of food.
Students can choose from a number of choices including Pizza
from the Pizza Cucina, International foods from International
Faire, healthy foods such as salads from the Healthy Bite,
and other beverages from Quenchers, & classic American
foods from the American Grille. While students eat their lunch,
they can watch the latest news or school announcements on
the gigantic screen or see performances on the miniature stage.
Since
much of the coursework in place at Skyview takes advantage
of technology, Skyview includes labs in every wing which contains
Dell computers with access to the Vancouver School District's
computer network (Vannet), powerful software, the Internet
via a T-1 line and an in-school Intranet system which allows
access to high-powered research systems and more. Along with
this technology includes multiple "theaters" which
feature a screen for presentations and will eventually have
distance-learning in operation when the School District's
Fiber Network is in place.
Besides
the characteristics of Skyview's design for day-to-day classwork,
there is a 1400-seat Auditorium where school-wide and community
events occur. This auditorium was designed with elaborate
lighting, sound, and projection equipment, which is used for
a multitude of purposes such as speeches and concerts. Skyview's
Auditorium has hosted many events, including the Metropolitan
Youth Symphony under the direction of Lajos Balogh, the Skyview
Jazz Festival, Peter White, and many more.
Skyview
High School was designed to handle the upcoming needs of education
in the 21st century. Surely, this school is ready for these
new challenges which will effect the educational experience
of all of its students.
Food
Court
Skyview
High School offers alternatives to the standard school lunch
program. The restaurants that are in Skyview are not McDonald's,
Pizza Hut, etc...but they do serve the same types of food.
Students can choose from a number of choices including Pizza
from the Pizza Cucina, International foods from International
Faire, healthy foods such as salads from the Healthy Bite,
soda pop and other beverages from Quenchers, & classic
American foods from the American Grille. Students may also
participate in the preparation and marketing of the foods
as a class.
Skyview
uses a computerized accounting system for lunch tickets. Students
have the option to pay the cashier for 30 days of lunches
and have them placed into their student account. Then, when
a student buys lunch each day, the proper fee is deducted.
Students
must be wearing and have their IDs visible to purchase lunch
at Skyview High School. This ensures that students are paying
with their own account, not another student's.
