Science Olympiad is a team based science and math program that allows students to gain knowledge that would normally not be taught in High school courses. Students will be able to apply new material and compete against individuals from other schools. Rewards include receiving medals for recognition at regional competitions, and winning scholarships at National. Members will be expected to show up to meetings on time and keep up to date on their events as well as preparing themselves for the competition in March. The instructors will be able to provide members with basic materials to get started and will try to help in any way possible but the success of the team relies on everyone taking responsibility and researching their topics themselves.

There are a total of twenty-three events placed in three categories: design events, experimental events and academic events. Design events require the construction of some type of device. This type of event requires a significant amount of time and unwavering commitment. Design events will be done primarily at home. During meets the device can be brought in for testing or to develop conceptual ideas that will improve its functionality. Experimental events consist of subjects being asked to either develop an experiment or to identify certain substances. Trial labs that mimic the type of setup that a competition will have will be available during meets. Academic events are the least hands-on and simply require subject to take a test to assess their knowledge of various topics. These topics range from general knowledge of science as in Five Star to more specific topics such as Astronomy. For more information visit www.soinc.org

Science Olympiad will meet every Tuesday at 2:15 to 3:15 in room 806 unless otherwise noted.
