WASL (Washington Assessment of Student Learning)
In addition to earning 23.0 credits, students are required to pass the WASL. For the graduating classes of 2008-2012, students must pass the reading and writing WASL, a state-approved alternative to the WASL, or an assessment for students in special education. Students can meet the math requirement by passing the math WASL, a state-approved alternative, or an assessment for students in special education OR they can continue to earn math credits until they graduate. Students who pass the reading, writing, and math assessments earn a Certificate of Academic Achievement or Certificate of Individual Achievement and a high school diploma. Students who fulfill the math requirement by earning math credits do not receive a certificate, but do earn a diploma. The science WASL will be an added requirement for the Class of 2013 (and beyond).
COLLEGE ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
College-bound students should be aware that entrance requirements vary from college to college. Contact the college or university you plan to attend directly to learn about their specific admission requirements. In general, four-year public universities in Washington state require, at a minimum, the following for admission:
ENGLISH………………………..4 years
SOCIAL STUDIES…………..…3 years
MATHEMATICS…………...…...3 years (algebra I, geometry, and adv. algebra)
SCIENCE………………………..2 years (biology, chemistry, or physics)
FOREIGN LANGUAGE………..2 years (of the same foreign language)
FINE ARTS………………….…..1 year
Students will be required to earn a specific number of credits in each of six subject areas, called College Academic Distribution Requirements (CADRs). The subject areas are math, English, science, social science, world languages, and the arts. Beginning in the fall of 2008, high school ninth grade students who plan to apply for admission to any of Washington’s public baccalaureate institutions in 2012 must earn three credits of CADR courses each year of high school, (including the twelfth grade year).
