Mathematical Meaningful Writing

Mathematical Meaningful Writing (MMW) is a format for a written or typed document showing your understanding of the solution to a mathematical problem.

Your finished paper should

Show YOUR BEST WORK;

Be NEAT and ORGANIZED; and
READ like a Technical Report;

You should remember to

Use COMPLETE sentences;
Use PROPER GRAMMAR and CORRECT SPELLING; and
Use an Equation Editor.

** Portfolio pieces must be typed**

1. Problem Statement – State the problem in your own words.

Write clearly so that anyone who reads your paper can understand exactly what you were asked to do.

Include all of the information given in the problem.

2. Process – Record your thinking process.

Write out what you were thinking when you solved this problem. In other words, what logic did you use?

What approaches or strategies did you take to solve this problem? Analysis of failed attempt(s) should be included.

Include all calculations, graphs, charts, calculator entries, or computer generated work.

3. Solution– Show your solution.

Write your solution as clearly as possible so that it will convince someone that you have it correct.

The process must support your final solution.
Does your solution answer the problem posed?
If your problem involves data, what conclusions can you draw from the results?

4. Reflection – Explain what you learned.

What is the importance of the mathematical ideas gained?

What mathematical concept(s) and procedure(s) are being used? (Number Sense, Geometric Sense, Data & Probability, Algebraic Sense)

What process skill(s) does this assignment demonstrate? (Problem Solving, Reasoning, Communicating, Making Connections)
