You will be studying Integrated Geometry in a new way. SIMMS Intergraded Mathematics Level 2 is the name of our book. During the course of the year we will study many of the same topics your parent(s) did in school but we will do it in a different way. We want to get you ready for a world filled with change. Problem solving and reasoning are a driving force of the course. Many times you will see applications to science and social studies. What a great way to make math real and useful. The availability of technology makes the way we do things and learn different. Not only will we see traditional topics, but also we will see them by exploring data and statistics. We are going to have fun learning together in cooperative groups, using graphing calculators, and the computers programs. This is truly an exciting adventure in looking at mathematics that is used everyday and is not just in a textbook that you never use again.
This year we will be working hard to prepare you for your future wither that is the next math course, your other classes here at Skyview, a future job or citizen or college. One of the things you will face is standardized test. This maybe the WASL, SAT, a placement test for college, or from a future employer. You want to do your best. We will be working on those skills also.
The points you earn from Quizzes, Tests, Assignments, Participation, Projects, Module Packet, and Presentation will determine your grade. In other words, everything you do. I value your on-task behavior during every activity, complete work on all assignments with work shown, good group work skills, asking good questions, participation in class and the group process and well presented projects. Recorded grades will reflect the valued behaviors. On time attendance, behavior to assure that all students have the opportunity to learn and your full participation will influence this mark. Although many times we will be working together, you are individually accountable for the core learnings and extensions of each unit It is anticipated that we will cover the 5 chapters of the text during the first semester and the 6 chapters during the second semester. This is a new text so we will learn together as we adjust the pacing.
The level 2 SIMMS course builds on the algebra, geometry, probability, statistics and discrete mathematics of level 1. Matrix operations, elementary polynomials, and combinatorics are introduced. Aspects of both traditional and transformational geometry are studied. The mathematics is always presented in context. These include: genetics, business inventory, radioactive decay, carnival games, homebuilding, and fair division.
Math Dept grading percentages are as follows:
A: 93-100% B+: 87-89% C: 73-76% D+: 67-69% F: 0-62%
A-: 90-92% B: 83-86% C-: 70-72% D: 63-66%
B-: 80-82% C+: 77-79%
Quizzes will be given through out each unit. Sometimes they may be a homework question that is written up and handed in, sometimes a paper and pencil quiz. At the end of each unit there will be a Module test. Each of these is an individual activity. (Often you will be tested in two parts, one with the calculator and one without.) Even though you will almost always be working in groups or pairs you are individually accountable for the knowledge. We each learn in different ways. It is your responsibility to find the best way for you. Your teacher and your group will help, just as you help your teacher and group to learn.
Test maybe retaken for a maximum score of 80% but must be done on your own time after completing all corrections to the test. This must be done within one week of receiving the test back. Make arrangements ahead of time and arrive with the completed corrections. Quizzes may not be retaken.
You will need to come prepared to learn everyday. In order to do that you will need your book (Covered), pencil and pen, paper, data storage device and graph paper, notebook with pocket and calculator (TI83/TI84 ). I will have a class set of TI-84 graphing calculators available. Both math and science will be using the TI83 and TI84 calculator. If at all possible this is the calculator of choice. If this is not possible you need a scientific calculator. Much of what we do on the calculator can not be done with a scientific calculator. Much of your homework will require the use of a calculator. You can arrange to come in and use one of the graphing calculators at lunch or before and after school. The Library does have a few that may be checked out. If you purchase a calculator please save the proof of purchase code for me.
We will be discussing the standard of behavior during the first few days. Usually these detailed lists of desired behavior boil down to TRUST, COOPERATION, RESPECT, and RESPONSIBILITY. As we learn together we need to care for one another. If your choice of behavior is disruptive to the process of learning for yourself or for another student, we will follow a plan of action to return to a successful, quality and fun classroom environment. This may include a chat, detention time, parent contact, or lastly an appointment with an administrator or counselor.
Make a choice for success.
