Trying to figure out which school to go to can be scary. In fact, many students wait so long to decide they miss some opportunities. One of the best ways to feel more in control of the situation is to ask yourself some basic questions about yourself. This can serve as direction for your decision.

Here are some key questions and how they relate to the college issue. Take your time and write down your answers. Then take some time to reflect on how your answers can guide your college decision.

  1. What are my interests? Think of the courses you've liked, activities you've excelled at and hobbies you love.
  2. How independent am I? Do you work better on your own or with guidance? Do you seek approval from teachers and thrive from their feedback?
  3. How far away from home do I want to be? How important are family ties to you? How much will transportation add to the cost of college? How often would you like to see your family during the school year?
  4. Am I serious about athletics? Is playing sports important to me? Would I be satisfied with playing on an intramural or club team? How many hours per week will I want to spend on athletics?
  5. What are my career plans? Do I have a major in mind? Do I plan to go on to graduate or professional school?
  6. How do I learn best? Do I like to participate in class? Do I enjoy working in small groups?
  7. Where do I want to learn? Do I want a private or public school? Do I want a large or small school? Do I want a rural, urban or suburban location?
