Land mines are the bane of many countries not fortunate enough to possess the technology, know-how, or means to remove them. Even long after the war that they were placed for is over, they remain, killing innocent victims, destroying nations, and generating a lingering air that there is still something to be afraid of. Such a situation poses both a safety and security threat, since the mines not only kill people off, but make them unsure about the actions of their own government, can eventually incite rebellion, and collapse an entire system.

Libya, the victim of many minefields over the years, has come to learn the importance of the removal of such weapons as quickly as possible. The dangers and consequences of such weapons can be catastrophic, and we do not want to risk further damage due to inconveniently placed minefields.

We would propose that the United Nations ban such weapons immediately, for the continued safety of all member nations. Then, each nation which has been a victim of mines will have a safe opportunity to clean up, including disabling or neutralizing mines, and to destroy all existing unplanted mines. This resolution would also have all member nations forsworn against the further use of mines, allowing safer international passage, and making mine-afflicted countries better places to live overall.
