SKYVIEW BECOMES LIBYA

Skyview took running the UN, if just in simulation, seriously. Palestinian-Israeli, AIDS/HIV and disarmament topics were discussed and debated. Would it be more fair, and within the jurisdiction of the UN Charter, to allow all nations to develop weaponry of choice for their sovereign defense? No restrictions on nuclear, bio or chemical armaments? Ask Libya (or not).

Four SHS students, Chris Whitling, Chris Hope, James Bodell and Jeff Jenkins were selected to represent SHS in the 2002 Washington State Model United Nations at the University of Washington in Seattle, 4/5-6. They were selected on the basis of outstanding participation in the 2001 VSD Model UN, SHS MUN Team, scholarship, citizenship and political involvement in the Clark County community.

The four students chose to represent the rogue nation of The Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya (aka Libya). Their zest and expertise in debate skills made them leaders in their respective committee rooms, lending excitement to the proceedings. Chris Hope was elected Rapporteur by the delegates in his room. In his capacity as Rapporteur, Chris addressed more than 500 delegates from 33 schools and 3 states about humanitarian issues discussed in his committee.

AWARDS

First Place and Honorable Mention Awards (no second, third or fourth places) are awarded at WASMUN.

Chris Hope: Honorable Mention and Coach Award for Best Committee Conciliator
Chris Whitling: Honorable Mention and Coach Award for Strongest Committee Leader
James Bodell: Coach Award for Most Knowledgeable Delegate

WASMUN is put on by the World Affairs Council and the University of Washington and is primarily funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Skyview's participation was made possible by the SHS Booster Club. Active in the SHS and district MUN program,

Whitling, Hope, Bodell and Jenkins, along with their fellow members in the SHS MUN Team, are putting on a Model United Nations for the district May 21-22. This time Whitling, Hope and Bodell will be representing Libya's political nemesis, the US. Mr. Jenkins will be representing the Palestine Authority. About 250 students are expected to participate from about 10 schools.
