Over the last few decades, Mozambique has seen countless terrorist threats.  While none of these were on the scale of the September 11th attacks, they were still threats against our people, and thus were of the gravest nature. We have seen the turmoil of uprisings and rebellions time and time again, if not in our own nation than by watching the affairs of our neighbors. We have seen what these people are willing to do, the lengths to which a terrorist is willing to go to prove that his way is the way of the right and the good. Thus, it should come as no surprise that the very thought of one of these people possessing a weapon of such destructive power as a nuclear bomb is one of the most terrifying things that we can imagine.

We of Mozambique believe that as long as such weapons are in existence, it will always be possible to for terrorists to seize and control them. Since nuclear bombs have been used only twice in warfare, and biological and chemical weapons sparingly, we believe that the only sure way of eliminating the threat of these weapons being used against an innocent target is to get rid of the weapons entirely. It is for this reason that Mozambique supports the complete nuclear disarmament of all United Nations members. While this may seem to be quite an extreme measure to take, it is worth noting that the entire goal of the United Nations is to achieve world peace, and world peace will never be truly achieved by means of an arms standoff between the superpowers.

What’s more, we come back to our old complaint that this issue most greatly affects the wealthiest, most industrialized nations of the world.  Mozambique deals not with nuclear weapons and anthrax threats, but with more conventional weapons such as land mines, bombs, and the classic mob with machine guns. We believe that full nuclear disarmament would to greater widespread elimination of weapons of war from the world, and help other nations get back on track with their more human issues rather than dealing with mine fields and AK-47 wielding street gangs. To truly realize the goals of this organization, all nations must lay down their weapons and come to this council under a commitment of peace.
