Dear Parents/Guardians and Students,
A big welcome to students who chose Skyviews Speech and Debate Class. Please read over the attached Class Syllabus and Plagiarism Policy for more information.
Students who sign up for the 7th period Tuesday and Thursday afternoon class will have daily computer lab access. Students may sign up for additional after school supervised computer lab time for further research or class make-up any day of the week pending appointment with Dr. Questad.
After you have had a chance to review this packet, please sign, date, detach and have your student return this top confirmation documentation by September 6th or earlier so your student can earn credit. The remainder of the syllabus and Plagiarism Policy should be kept in your students notebook for easy reference. I look forward to meeting you at Skyview's Open House on October 8th at 7:00.

PROFESSIONALISM |

"Misuse of evidence is one of the worst offenses
a person can commit in debate.
When someone makes up, changes a quotation, it is abusive. It hurts anyone
who has researched honestly.
Judges drop debaters who make up evidence. Many coaches will expel students
who make up evidence.
So, when you bracket and cut a piece of evidence, make sure it accurately
represents what the author meant "

3. No insults, sexist or racist language in class or debate.
4. In judging and evaluation, constructive comments begin with praise on what we do well or are improving.

TARDY POLICY
|
Performance Reports
Grades will be posted under "Your Grade" on
the Speech-Debate Class web site and accessed using student's last name
and ID number. Periodically grade reports will be sent home and required
returned with parent signature.
Late Work
No late work is accepted except for students on a 174, 504
or IEP contract stipulating a late work acceptance policy. Students may not
deliver presentations unless they have submitted their written work by the due
date.
Absences
Debate is a participation class. Students cannot miss scheduled
case presentations and debates. Any student who misses a scheduled presentation
or debate will receive a 0 unless previous arrangements have been made. For
example, phone partner(s) and email me a minimum of 26 hours in advance so a
schedule change can be made during class time. While students are not graded
for attendance, many grades are related to in-class participation, not only
to show mastery of course goals and objectives but also as a commitment to others
in the class counting on your teaming.
Students will be expected to make up all absences through
accessing Dr. Questad's Web site when absent.
Make-up for Excused
Absences: A correctly completed Late Pass
required stapled to assignment
If a student is absent, please call the office with a
request for missing work if hand-outs were not available on the Speech-Debate
Web site. Assignment clarification will be available via e-mail request: bquestad@vansd.org.
Work/presentation from absence is generally due on the day or return unless
other arrangements are made to reflect make-up time not greater than within
24 hours of return from a one-day absence, 48 from a 2-day, etc.
Assignment Requirement
All assigned work must be word processed in size 12 font,
double-spaced, unless otherwise instructed. If a student does not have a computer
at home or has a problem with Skyview/home computer compatibility, an appointment
may be made with Dr. Questad to work in the computer lab before or after school.

Plagiarism is presenting another persons words or ideas without correct, complete citation. |
