7TH PERIOD OPPORTUNITY
Speech Communication/Debate: 1 Semester
Sign up for the regular class or ... sleep in and
sign up for the 7th period class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:15-4:45

In this class students improve their ability to inform, influence and persuade others. Speeches are written for a variety of audiences, including interpersonal situations, career settings and public speaking. Internet research and email access is required.

During second quarter the culminating experiences include a "Student Take-Over" where students direct the experience of the class.

Regional debate and speech tournament participation opportunities are made available as well as membership in the National Forensic League, highly respected by colleges and universities.

The Wall Street Journal has noted three suprising findings in college admissions. First, participation in sports does little for applicants unless these students win state or national awards. Second, community service "matters less than you might expect." Third, dedicated participation in drama and debate significantly impacted the success rate of college apllicants to all schools (Luong - Yale Univerisity).
