SPEECH AND DEBATE SCOPE AND SEQUENCE: 02-03
1. SYLLABUS (3 days)
* Students form teams and pages assigned to present
* Brainstorm great ways to present a syllabus so students don't fall apart
Elicit: senses, learning modes, 7 intell., humor and games
* Planning time- get phone numbers- due tomorrow
* Rehearsal
Presentation: Students judge
* Go over judging sheets
* Dress rehearsal
* 2 days of presentation
* Review what we liked of each one
* vote - prizes for best team
* Discuss: why did that team win?
2. LYING in debate
* 2 Truths and a lie
* Brainstorm: what made person believable?
Elicit: authoritative, self-confident, fluent
3. ETIQUETTE
* Constructive, no sexist language, personal attacks, profanity, no emotion,
speak to judges- not opponent, polite, appeal to judges (what do they want?)
4. ARGUMENT TYPES
Practice each one- using etiquette, authority, confidence and
fluency plus what the type is
Judging Criteria:
Student Choice by secret ballot (bonus credit)
* Psychological: You want to have your curfew waived this Saturday night for your first date with someone who is a little on the wild side. - or your choice of situations that on the surface doesn't look wise
*Logical: For or against a pre-emptive strike against Iraq - or your choice of international situations - convince the president
*Opinion: Which singer should get Grammy - or your choice of entertainment awards - convince the class
* Precedent: You may each get a
school rule or situation at SHS that you have to attack or defend on the basis
of precedent.
Examples: There should or should not (your choice) have
walls for all classes - or it should be okay to chew gum at SHS -or it should
be okay to eat or drink in any class - or your choice on any school rule
