on
"America's
New War"

Whitling, MUN and Debate President, moderates

America was attacked and our students were shocked, angry and puzzled.

Within 24 hours the 9/28/01 Political Forum was planned.

It was Mr. Parlee's idea first. A political forum with community leaders answering student questions in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attack.

The Debate Class supported the plan.

Chris Hope and Chris Whitling, Model UN Club members, liked it too. They stayed after school developing a Powerpoint presentation plan and presented it to SHS principal, Rick Larson, and associate principals, pressing for immediate approval. Mr. Larson added the offer to ask US Senator Brian Baird.

Mr. Larson, SHS Principal, opens Forum
Mr. Larson gave complete support and help on the 9/28 Political Forum
making students' vision a reality.

HIGHLIGHTS

The danger of complacency and religious misunderstandings

Education on terrorism, Middle Eastern and Afghani affairs

More financial support for our first line of defense, our firefighters

Ms. Dow leads off with a question written by
students asking if enough is being done to protect
against an ethnic backlash.

The rest is history.

The event, spearheaded by Chris Whitling and Chris Hope, was covered live by Channel 30 and the VSD closed circuit TV. Over 700 students were in the audience and over 20 got to ask questions. An email component was added to enable students from other sites and classrooms to email in questions.

The Columbian was there as was the SHS school paper.
