GOING TO THE THEATER
In Athens, playwrites competed for awards in drama competitions that were held twice a year. Businesses closed and prisoners were allowed out of jail for the day. The theater was one of the few places open to women, though those who were married generally stayed home. An esteemed jury watched each play and voted on which was the best. The winning playwrite was held in tremendous prestige.
