Committee 1: Security Council, Special Political and Disarmament

Topic: Sanctions on Israel

Submitted by: The Syrian Arab Republic

RECOGNIZING the war crimes and crimes against humanities committed by the government and military of Israel against the Arab populace whose land they inhabit,

ALSO RECOGNIZING that the United Nations passed a resolution in1947 recommending the partition of Israel as its own state with a provision outlining the need for Jerusalem to remain an international zone and not part of the nation of Israel,

AWARE that in April of 1949 Israel decided to split Jerusalem with Jordan in what came to be known as the Isreali-TransJordan Armistice Agreement,

FURTHER AWARE that in April of 1949 Israel violated this treaty, as well as the United Nations Resolution proposing the creation of the State of Israel by declaring Jerusalem its capitol with no regard to previous treaties,

REALIZING that Israel has never been sanctioned for seizing Jerusalem and that no other country formally recognizes Jerusalem as the capitol of Israel,

REQUESTS that Israel return Jerusalem to a U.N. controlled international zone and move its capitol facilities elsewhere in compliance with the U.N.;

RECOMMENDS that if Israel does not comply within 6 months, action be taken to remove Israel's member status in the U.N.;

FURTHER REQUESTS that if Israel does not comply, economic sanctions be placed on all military equipment into or out of Israel in order to limit their ability to defend the illegally held city of Jerusalem.
