NOTICING that Persistant Organic Polutants (POPs), which by definition are resistant to the natural break-down process, are being poured into the ocean and will continue to pollute our environment,
FULLY AWARE that these chemicals are man-made, long-lived and extremely stable, and
NOTING WITH REGRET that the United States produces the majority of POPs,
SUGGESTS that a scientific commission be established to devise a strategic plan for storage and space disposal of all POPs;
RECOMMENDS that nations with companies who have produced the POPs be financially responsible for the safe storage of POPs until space disposal is available;
REQUESTS that nations with POP companies allow UN supervision and monitoring of POP safe storage; and
FURTHER REQUESTS that countries mandate a moratorium on new POP production until a safe disposal plan is devised and available.
