SUBJECT OF RESOLUTION: Systematic Persecution of Women

SUBMITTED TO: Humanitarian Committees 4

SUBMITTED BY: United States of America

RECOGNIZING that the evangelical Islamic sect known as Taliban has been gaining power over much of the Middle East and North Africa, and in 1996 seized control over most of Afghanistan,

FURTHER RECOGNIZING that the Taliban ruling party forbids women to

1. work outside the home

2. attend universities

3. be touched by doctors

FULLY AWARE that in Taliban-controlled areas women are beaten if they expose their skin,

KEEPING IN MIND that the Afghan women are required to wear burqas (confining shawls covering the entire body) which do not allow sunlight and its healthy effects on their skin,

REMINDING us that Taliban influences are as discriminatory as apartheid, once practiced against blacks in South Africa,

FURTHER REMINDING us that these rules constitute a systematic persecution of women and significantly endanger their health,

KEEPING IN MIND that all countries have signed the Universal Declaration of Universal Rights,

REQUESTS that all UN nations impose economic sanctions, excluding medical and agricultural products, on Taliban regimes which continue to persecute women.
