SUBJECT OF RESOLUTION: Child Labor

SUBMITTED TO: Economic and Humanitarian Committees 3 and 4

SUBMITTED BY: India

AWARE that many developing countries use child labor to supplement their economics and instill the values of an honest day's work in youngsters,

ALARMED by the fact that some nations have expressed a desire to ban this practice,

AFFIRMING that child labor is not a violation of the rights of children but simply a way to ensure the proper upbringing of all citizens,

RECOGNIZING that Article 23 of the UDHR allows everyone the right to work, without any discrimination, and

GUIDED by the national traditions of many countries which have employed children for generations and which, incidentally, have lower crime rates,

REQUESTS that the practice of promoting child labor be seen for what it is, a beneficial practice which is certainly not a problem, much less an international issue for debate, stigmatization or threatened sanctions;

FURTHER REQUESTS that the UN Charter and UDHR, where misinterpreted, be amended to support diverse child labor opportunities and training; and

URGES all countries to recognize the right to decide child labor practices as a sovereign matter of individual nations.
