FRANCE: Click here for reports on stance. There is strong sympathy in France for the Dalai Lama and much support for Free Tibet movement- but Pres. Chirac says France agrees Tibet is part of China. France calls on China to begin a dialogue with Dalai Lama.

2. TAIWAN

Position report

FYI: Taiwan is Washington State’s sixth-largest trading partner in terms of two-way, pass-through trade. In 1999, $1.1 billion worth of Washington State goods were exported to Taiwan, including $386 million in agricultural products. Fuel for Taiwan’s economic expansion of five percent annually, with negligible inflation, has come mainly from an increase in domestic demand. Rising disposible income (an 8.8% increase in 1998) has led to increased purchases of imported items from household goods to snack foods. Government statistics call for a 6.5% growth in Taiwan’s economy this year. <http://www.wasmun.com>

France may be pro-Taiwan to allow it access to missle technology, but it also acknowledges China's sovereignty over Taiwan. It looks like France walks a fine financial line with China and Taiwan. Possibly duplicitous and goes where the money is. Big French rift with China over Taiwan support.

Sanctions against Cuba: a list of articles to read on Global Policy Forum

Bill Clinton on Cuba (November 8, 2000)

UN Passes Cuba Resolution Calling for an End to US Embargo - Again (November 9, 2000)
The resolution passed with 167 votes in favor - the widest margin in the nine years that Cuba has brought the initiative to the United Nations. Only the United States, Israel and the Marshall Islands voted against it. Four countries abstained. (Associated Press)

End Cuban Embargo: Call From ICC (October 19, 2000)
The Vice-President of the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) is calling for the lifting of the US trade embargo. But rather for the moral reason of the sanctions being "counterproductive...hurting the civilian population of Cuba", the interests of the US business moguls are more likely the voice behind the call. (ICC Press Release)

US Votes to Ease Cuba Sanctions (July 21 2000)
