The General Assembly should pass a resolution launching negotiations in the UN for an international conflict diamonds treaty, says Global Witness. Their press release also says that while the diamond industry has made proposals to stem the trade of conflict diamonds, these have not been implemented.

Stratfor writes on Russia's call for an end to US and British air strikes against Iraqi targets. Putin also declared "the Russian leadership's firm intention to obtain a rapid political settlement to the Iraqi problem, including the lifting of sanctions against Iraq."

Russia in New Push to Lift Iraq Sanctions (September 12, 2000)
France and Russia are stepping up the pressure on Iraq sanctions and the Financial Times worries that the sanctions "will soon be meaningless". Russia has written to the Secretary General arguing a substantial loss of business from the embargo.

Britain and US Isolated Over Tottering Trade Embargo on Iraq (August 2, 2000)
France, China, and Russia are for lifting Iraq sanctions. The UK and the US are adamant about imposing sanctions until the elimination of weapons of mass destruction is confirmed. However it seems that the UK is now starting to question this stance. (Daily Telegraph - London)

UN Passes Cuba Resolution Calling for an End to US Embargo - Again (November 9, 2000)
The resolution passed with 167 votes in favor - the widest margin in the nine years that Cuba has brought the initiative to the United Nations. Only the United States, Israel and the Marshall Islands voted against it. Four countries abstained. (Associated Press)

MPs from the House of Commons in Britain have urged in a letter that the British government condemn US sanctions against Cuba in the General Assembly vote. (Daily Telegraph)
