UNITED NATIONS SQUARES

Objectives:

1. To review information related to the United Nations
2. To assess students' level of knowledge and understanding of the UN
3. To relate the UN to the concerns of students' own lives

Procedures: Modeled on "Hollywood Squares"

1. Students read Chapter 2, "Information on the United Nations"

2. Students fill in each square with a short question and answer based on the reading.

3. Students form two teams and assign a secretary.

4. Students brainstorm their questions and answers to concoct a suitably appropriate and difficult grid which the secretary types up and turns in. (Dr. Q. will copy them for each team member- one team's master will be blue and the other white).

5. Each team member gets a copy of the respective team grid to study for a specified amount of time. Then they are all turned in.

6. Students see a portion of "Hollywood Squares"

7. One member from each team (or a pair from each team) is selected as the contestant and each contestant is assigned an O or X

8. Remaining students sit in 9 chairs (2 may be to a "chair")

9. Each "chair" has a card with an X on one side and an O on the other.

10. The moderator gives the question for alternating contestants.

11. The contestant may choose any "chair" to answer. If the contestant correctly agrees or disagrees with the "chair" s/he gets the X. If the contestant is incorrect, s/he gets a 0. If any team member helps out a contestant, the other team gets the X.
