MODEL UNITED NATIONS/SPEECH CLASS SYLLABUS
"Bringing Global Perspectives to Future Leaders"
Motto of American Model United Nations.

Course Content:

1. History of the development of the UN
2. Purpose and Principles of the UN
3. Structure of UN
4. Parliamentary Procedure
5. MUN simulation
6. Country and issue research
7. Resolution Writing
8. Debate

Requirements:

1. One folder for all work returned
2. One 3-hole 2 inch (or greater) empty notebook
3. Internet access at school and home
4. TV news access at home
5. Print media access: news magazine, and/or newspaper
6. Documentation using MLA (Modern Languages Assoc.) format
7. Participation in the VSD Model United Nations
8. Signed parent Release form

governments work together to deal with common problems that touch everyone's life:
nuclear proliferation, economic instability, environmental dangers,
oppression, and injustice to humanity."

This course should enable you to improve your skills in:

(1) speaking using a variety of presentation skills
(2) constructing, presenting and defending sound ideas and arguments
(3) analyzing and evaluating the ideas and arguments of others
(4) persuasion
(5) projecting an authoritative impression
(6) fluency and quick thinking in extemporaneous speaking
(7) devising effective speech content


Class Purposes

* to learn more about global problems and how they affect us
* to further develop speaking and thinking potential
* to make the voice of the student as an American heard in solving these problems
* to meet other students who want to make the UN work better
* to help keep the world in peace


 PROTOCOL

This class basically combines instruction on speaking, debating and the United Nations
in a simulation format where we are required to act within the confines of certain diplomatic roles.

  • On time, in seat by bell

    Computer and Internet access
    are required.
    An appointment may be made

    with Dr. Questad to work in the
    503 computer lab before or after school,
    in the evening or on a weekend
    if you do not have access
    to a computer at home. 


    Specific Rules of
    Information Presentation

    1. Use correct and full bibliographical citation

    2. No plagiarism

    3. No insults, sexist or racist language in class,
    speech presentation or debate.

    4. In peer judging and evaluation,
    constructive comments begin
    with praise on what we do well
    or are improving.

    TARDY POLICY FOR ALL DELEGATES

    First – Warning
    Second – Warning
    Third – Detention
    Fourth
    – Detention
    Fifth – Two Detentions
    Upon a 6th Tardy----a FORMAL written referral to the appropriate administrator will be submitted. Saturday School will be assigned. From here on out Dr. Questad will work with administration to assign additional Saturday Schools and/or suspensions until the problem is solved. Failure to attend detention is a second violation in and of itself.
    Special Note: On time means seated in assigned seat and bathroom breaks during class time constitute tardies.



    ASSIGNMENTS AND
    GRADING POLICY
    Graded assignments will include worksheets,
    speech presentations, debates and judging tabulations.
    You will receive rubrics and explanations on all major assignments.
     

    Late Work

    No late work is accepted.

    Absences

    MUN/Speech is a participation class. While students are not graded for attendance, many grades are related to in-class participation, not only to show mastery of objective but also as a commitment to the efficient running of MUN and related speech projects.

    Students will be expected to make up all absences as much as possible through additional participation and work outside of class or receive a zero for the assignment missed.

    Technology Requirement

    All work must be word processed unless otherwise instructed. If a student does not have a computer at home or has a problem with Skyview/home computer compatibility, an appointment may be made with Dr. Questad to work in computer lab before or after school, in the evening or on a weekend.

    Dear Parents/Guardians,

    We welcome your student to Skyview's Model United Nations and Speech Class.

    Please read over the attached Class Syllabus. Your student will earn points returning this letter back with your signature.

    Students in this class are expected to participate in and help put on the Vancouver School District's Model United Nations on Tuesday, May 14th, 6:00-9:30 PM at Skyview, and Wednesday, May 15th, 7:30-3:30 all day at Skyview. S/he will be given a school event excused absence from all classes on May 15th. The evening Model UN simulation is open to the public as is the awards ceremony on the 15th, approximately 2:00-3:00.

    Parents are encouraged to be active participants in UN related research and discussion with their students. Several thought-provoking and controversial topics will be covered, including the Israeli-Palestinian issue, trafficking in contraband and crimes against women and children. Students who gain insights at the dinner table enrich our class as well as bring fresh ideas to our debates.

    After you have had a chance to review this packet, please sign, date, and detach this for your student to return by February 8th. The other pages should be kept in your student's notebook for easy reference. Also needed is the Internet permission form filled out.
