OFFICIAL INVITATION TO COACHES

THE VANCOUVER SCHOOL DISTRICT

THE 2003 MODEL UNITED NATIONS

Thursday, June 5, 6:40-9:00 PM,
Friday, June 6,
7:40- 3:00 PM

Open to all high school students
and 8th grade middle school students

REHEARSALS
All are welcome, whether country assignment has been made or not.
Tentative Date:  May 1 – Alki  Middle School – Information to be Published

DELEGATIONS
Each high school may select 1-5 countries and two alternates, from the enclosed list.
Each middle school may select 2 countries.
Every country is represented on the Security Council.
Each country is required to have 6 confirmed delegates before requesting a country.

FEE
The VSD MUN participation fee is $5.00 per delegate and includes lunch.
Due by May 1, 2003.
~ No refunds ~
Make out the check to the Skyview High School Business Office.

LUNCH
Students will be required to eat lunch in the Skyview Commons.
Special student MUN ID badges will serve as a paid lunch ticket.

AWARDS
First place trophies will go to individual speakers and the winning team.
Rapporteurs will be elected in committee and report at the Awards Assembly.
Certificates 2nd place through 5th will be awarded at Judges' discretion.

TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING
Due to limited parking at SHS, school bus transportation is recommended for all teams.
Some parking may be available in the Alki Middle School parking lot, immediately west of SHS.
Parking in the surrounding SHS neighborhood is prohibited.

HIGH SCHOOLS
Please email your nation choices to Dr. Questad, bquestad@vansd.org
(or Beverly Questad), fax, campus mail or US mail BEFORE March 20th. First come, first served.
Requests* are accepted beginning November 20th at 12:01 am.
* At this time, US, UK, Russian Federation, China, France, Iraq and Israel are reserved for exclusive representation by high school students

MIDDLE SCHOOLS
Please email your nation choices to Dr. Questad BEFORE March 20th. Requests are accepted beginning 12/15 at 12:01 am.
At this time, middle schools are limited to a total of 10 countries. It will be first-come first-served.

Remaining Countries
If there are countries not taken by March 25th, the open countries will be available to all coaches on a first-come-first-served basis, whether representing a high school or middle school.

SIZE OF DELEGATIONS
Each delegation is required to have 6 delegates, assigned to the following committees, prior to submitting a country request:

Special Political

Humanitarian

Disarmament

Environment (includes land, space and seabeds)

Economic

Security Council

 

HEAD AMBASSADOR
The Head Ambassador of each country delegation is responsible for delegating responsibilities within the team, including the formulation of the team's credentials. The Head Ambassador will present the credentials with his/her respective team members on Friday night, 6/5, and arrange speaker responsibilities at the General Assembly.

MODERATORS, PAGES and SECURITY
The moderating teams for each committee will be college students.
Mrs. Henderson (thenders@vansd.org) will coordinate and train all middle school students who want to be pages. Security Officers and Guards will be coordinated by SHS.  If you have a student that wishes to serve as a Security Officer or Guard contact remerson@vansd.org

INDIVIDUAL STUDENT COMMITTEE PACKETS
Schools will be sent packets for each registered student upon receipt of registration fees. These packets will include the agenda, rules, committee resolutions, credential requirements and judging criteria.

CREDENTIALS
Each team submits credentials for the review of the Secretary-general, staff and judges.

RESOLUTIONS
Each team is urged to email resolution proposals to Dr. Questad (bquestad@vansd.org) from their respective countries and committees. All resolutions are due by Friday, February 22. The VSD MUN Faculty-Student Advisory Council will field and post selected resolutions on the MUN website by March first.
