ATTENDANCE and ASSESSMENT

Absences
Creative Writing is a participation class. While students are not graded for attendance, many grades are related to in-class writing and responding. Students are expected to make up all absences as much as possible through additional writing outside of class.

Make-up for Excused Absences
If a student is absent s/he may access the Creative Writing Web site calendar for assignments. Assignments are also available via email request (bquestad@vansd.org) or through calling Dr. Questad at 313-4252.
Work will be due within 24 hours of return from a one-day absence, 48 from a 2-day, etc.

 Grades

1. Professionalism: Quality participation in class activities, respect, cooperation, safety and dependability
2. Daily Work: Portfolio weekly grades are based on effort, following directions and creativity
3. Projects: Rubrics provided for major assignments

Grading Scale - Percentages to Grades
92-100 = A 90 - 91 = A-
88-89 = B+
83 - 87 = B
80-82 = B-
78-79 = C+
73-77 = C
70-72 = C-
68-69 = D+
60-67 = D
Less than 60 = F
 Failing Grade
Part of professionalism includes meeting deadlines, exhibiting congenial collaboration with peers as well as your CEO (Q) and following instructions. An incomplete assignment is better than nothing, but assignments not submitted by a due date will receive a failing grade.

PLAGIARISM POLICY

Plagiarism is presenting another person's words or ideas without correct, complete citation.

"The easiest way to avoid accidental plagiarism is to scrupulously cite your sources, and to quote correctly." (Rael).

The following require parenthetical reference* and complete citation in a bibliography.
1. Information, statistics and concepts that did not originate with you
2. Paraphrasing, a.k.a. rewording an author's thoughts or information
3. Summarizing what author thinks
4. Direct quote from author
5. Information gathered from Internet
6. Graphics, pictures, charts and photographs

 * A parenthetical reference is given directly after a sentence or paragraph.
It generally contains an author and page number in parenthesis.
Special Note: Items from Microsoft Clip Art do not have to be cited,
though it is not incorrect to do so.

Consequences for Plagiarism

First Time Plagiarism

1. Zero grade on assignment
2. Mandatory conference with Dr. Questad

Second Time Plagiarism
1. Zero grade on assignment
2. Parent notification
3. Parent conference and referral to administrator
