Course Description
This course is an introduction to the art of writing a variety of genres. We will engage in close reading of published short stories and poetry, thoughtful discussion and written exercises. Much of the class will function as a writers’ workshop, providing you with an opportunity to learn from others’ feedback on your work. Students will learn and practice the fundamentals of writing poetry and fiction using description, dialogue, tone, plot, theme and message development (Harris).
Class Purposes:
to experience, demonstrate and review original and creative written expression
to experience a variety of writing purposes, strategies, techniques and genres
to experiment with a variety of writing voices and styles
to participate in constructive peer responses to writing
