Reading in Freshman English
Points are available for participating in Silent Sustained Reading. All student book choices must be at or above instructional reading level and approved by parent and teachers. Inappropriate books include those below instructional level or containing inappropriate material.
Bonus Points/Extra Credit in Freshman English
- Participation points are earned each quarter as bonus credit.
- They may be used to augment your grade or in exchange for bathroom or talking privileges.
Performance Reports
If you do not have computer access at home, you may print off a copy of your grade report from any school computer to take home.
Late Work
- In preparing students for professional expectations, late work is not accepted except for students on a 504 or IEP contract stipulating a late work acceptance policy.
- Under most circumstances, except the research paper and poetry book, if a student has been absent work will be accepted within 24 hours of each day absent.
- Appeal hearings may be made scheduled with Dr. Questad and the Freshman Appeal Board if needed.
Absences
While students are not graded for attendance, many grades are related to in-class participation to show mastery of objective and are difficult to make up.
- Students will be expected to make up all absences through accessing our class web site.
- Families who take vacations during school time are strongly urged to reconsider as attendance issues create a major burden on students trying to make up work from all 6 or 7 of their classes.
- Most instruction, like discussions, vocabulary explanation and lectures are classroom-based and cannot be replicated.
- Some instruction cannot be given out before a student leaves because we progress as students show mastery, which cannot always be scheduled ahead of time on a calendar.
- When ill, a student can access what we do each day on our class web site which is updated daily.
- Students are expected to keep up with all reading when absent, as when they return we will be in ongoing book discussions.
Make-up for Excused Absences: A correctly completed Late Pass is required stapled to assignment
- If a student is absent, please use our web site for missing work. If hand-outs were not available online, please contact the school office for work.
- Assignment clarification will also be available via e-mail request.
- Work from an absence is due within 24 hours of return from a one-day absence, 48 from a 2-day, etc.
- No late work, even related to an absence, is accepted in most parts of the research and poetry book sequence. Please note full explanations for those assignments when they occur.
English Assignment Requirement
- All assigned work must be word processed in size 12 New Times Roman font, double-spaced, unless otherwise instructed. Papers not in this format will not be accepted.
- If a student does not have a computer at home or has a problem with Skyview/home computer compatibility, an appointment may be made with Dr. Questad to work in the computer lab before or after school.
