SOCIAL STUDIES 2007-2008

HISTORY IS the collective memory of mankind. Without a memory we cannot cope intelligently with the world around us. We cannot make sense of the problems we encounter, because we know nothing of their roots. We cannot have a deep and rich perception of who we are, because, like a victim of amnesia, we have lost the world that made us. We cannot have a clear sense of where we are going, because, by losing where we have been, we do not know where we are. To study history is to enrich our understanding of ourselves and deepen the meaning of human experience.

Learning Goals form the framework for our curriculum. The State of Washington has published guidelines for education in general and Social Studies in particular. These include Goals and Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs).

Syllabus and Class Downloads.  Your syllabus is published every two to four weeks. Each syllabus contains a tentative day-to-day schedule of events as well as information concerning areas of focus, assignments and tests. These are working documents, typically modified to meet student needs. This area also includes documents, worksheets and other information students need to participate in daily classroom activities as well as prepare for formally assessed events.

Links are provided to help with research projects as well as to enhance your understanding of reading and study assignments.

Rules & Guidelines includes expectations, rules and guidelines, materials needed and other administrative information for these classes .

Pre Advanced Placement and Advanced Placement.  Links to "The" AP and Pre-AP site. If you are taking AP or Pre-AP, an “AP Parent” or thinking about it, go there NOW!!!. I’ve also included a summary of the challenges involved.

The Skills Book is a collection of helpful items, with an emphasis on the "how to" of research, writing and study, the core elements of AP and pre-AP work. This area also contains rubrics for how work is assessed.
